In the spirit of fall being in full swing, I decided to take it upon myself to do a whole bunch of different fall activities to get into the mood. I went pumpkin picking with my sister, we carved them with varying degrees of skill, and I made her watch Hocus Pocus with me, a movie that she had somehow never watched. Afterwards, we watched some scary youtube videos to get into the feels of the spooky season.
I knew from the beginning that I wanted to try my hand at something fun and festive for Halloween, and when I came across some skull-shaped molds on Amazon, I just couldn't resist from buying them. The truth is, I had tried to make some of these last year, but the craft store where I had originally seen the molds had sold out of them and with it being so close to Halloween, everything online wouldn't have been shipped to me in time. So this year, I managed to successfully acquire the molds I needed!
That being said, unless you're some kind of expert cupcake carver, you're going to need some skull-shaped molds to make this one. Or, you could just make regular red velvet cupcakes, whatever floats your boat.
In true Dessert Time fashion, I decided to take a short cut by buying the pre-made red velvet cake mix to make the cupcakes.
I used the same hack as I do for making cakes, so that replacing a couple of the ingredients it says to use on the box with other ingredients to make the mixture more rich in flavor.
All things considered, this recipe is an easy one. It's literally just red velvet cupcakes in the shape of skulls, the only thing you really need that wouldn't be readily attainable would be the molds, but if you order those in time, then the rest is easy sailing.
As per usual, you're going to have to preheat your oven to 375
Make sure you actually turn the over on, because this time around, I made the mistake of not pre-heating it and by the time I was done mixing my ingredients together, I finally realized the the oven wasn't even ready.
In a large mixing bowl, you're going to combine:
The packet of red-velvet cake mix
1 cup of milk
8 tbsp of melted butter
3 large eggs
You have to make sure that you grease your baking pan thoroughly!! This is really important! The skull-shaped molds have a lot of detail to them and if you don't properly grease your pan, your cupcakes are going to get stuck to the pan and when you take them out, they'll look more like misshapen blobs than anything else.
You can use either baking non-stick spray, or butter. I, personally, used Pam spray with flour.
Anyway.
Pop those bad boys into the oven and let them bake until you can poke a toothpick in them and it comes out clean.
After this you're going to have to wait for them to cool down. If yours end up anything like mine, then there's going to be some excess on the cupcakes. Simply take a serrated knife and cut off the extra bits. If you greased your pan correctly, then when you flip the pan over, the cupcakes should just fall right out with all the detail in tact.
Finally, you'll have you spooky skulls waiting to be eaten! Enjoy!
